On October 11, 2024, Boeing filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) against the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), claiming that union leaders have not engaged in good faith negotiations during the ongoing strike. This strike, which began on September 13, has seen approximately 33,000 workers walk off the job, now entering its fourth week without resolution.

Boeing’s allegations assert that the IAM has failed to genuinely evaluate the company’s proposals, which included a significant wage increase. The company argues that its latest proposal was its “best and final” offer. However, the union has countered that Boeing’s proposed 30% wage increase is insufficient, demanding a 40% raise to match rising living costs and other benefits such as the reinstatement of a pension plan previously relinquished in 2014.

As the strike continues, economic concerns are mounting. Analysts from Oxford Economics have noted that the ongoing strike could hinder GDP growth for the remainder of the year, especially when combined with recent natural disasters impacting other regions. S&P Global Mobility has projected that Boeing may face a cash outflow of around $10 billion in 2024 due to this labor dispute and other operational challenges.

This unfolding situation highlights significant tensions between Boeing and its striking workforce as both sides remain entrenched in their positions.
