Disney’s Moana 2 has set a remarkable record during the Thanksgiving weekend, amassing an impressive $221 million in domestic box office sales from Wednesday to Sunday, marking it as the highest-grossing film for this holiday period. This figure surpasses the previous record held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $204.6 million last year. The sequel to the beloved 2016 film not only broke the five-day opening record but also eclipsed Frozen II‘s Thanksgiving weekend total of $125 million, establishing a new benchmark for holiday film releases.
The Thanksgiving weekend was also notable for other major releases. The combined box office earnings of Moana 2, Wicked, and Gladiator II exceeded $420 million, making it the most lucrative Thanksgiving weekend in history. Wicked earned approximately $117.5 million, while Gladiator II brought in $44 million during the same period.
Despite its commercial success, Moana 2 received mixed reviews from critics, currently holding a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have pointed out that it falls into typical sequel pitfalls, lacking the charm of the original film. Nevertheless, audiences have responded positively, contributing to its record-breaking box office performance.
As Disney continues to dominate the box office with its recent releases, it remains poised for further success with upcoming projects, including a live-action remake of Moana featuring Dwayne Johnson.
