The wildfires ravaging Los Angeles County have resulted in significant disruptions to the region’s healthcare system, with medical facilities facing evacuations, closures, and staffing shortages. As of January 13, 2025, the fires have forced at least one medical clinic to burn down and led to the evacuation of over 700 residents from nursing homes and care facilities, according to the California Department of Public Health.
The wildfires have not only displaced residents but also stressed hospitals and clinics throughout the county. Medical offices have closed, routine appointments have been canceled, and some healthcare providers have lost their homes or been forced to evacuate their neighborhoods. This has created challenges for maintaining adequate staffing levels across various health centers.
Emergency rooms in hospitals across Los Angeles County reported treating patients suffering from burns, smoke inhalation, and eye irritation due to the fires. The California Department of Managed Health Care has ordered health plans to ensure that enrollees affected by the wildfires have access to necessary medical services, including prescription drug refills .
The two major wildfires—the Palisades Fire in western Los Angeles County and the Eaton Fire on the Eastside—have collectively burned over 50 square miles and destroyed thousands of structures. Tragically, these fires have also claimed at least ten lives and left many others severely injured.
As healthcare professionals continue to navigate this crisis, they remain committed to their duties despite facing personal losses and challenges in their communities.
