Meta Platforms Inc. announced on January 8, 2025, that it will begin a test in the United States, Germany, and France to allow users to browse eBay listings directly on Facebook Marketplace. This initiative aims to enhance the offerings available on Marketplace and provide eBay sellers with access to Facebook’s expansive user base.

The pilot program will enable buyers to view eBay listings within Facebook Marketplace and complete transactions directly through eBay. Meta stated that this collaboration could benefit both platforms, as it would expose eBay sellers to a larger audience while giving Marketplace users access to a broader range of products from eBay’s community.

This move comes in response to ongoing scrutiny from European regulators. In November 2024, the European Commission imposed a fine of €798 million (approximately $840 million) on Meta for allegedly creating unfair trading conditions by favoring its own services within Facebook Marketplace. The Commission argued that this practice could “foreclose” competition in the online classifieds market due to Facebook’s extensive reach, which includes over 3 billion users globally.

The European Commission has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding Meta’s latest initiative. As this test unfolds, it could potentially reshape how users interact with both Facebook Marketplace and eBay, providing new opportunities for buyers and sellers alike.
