On September 24, 2024, Spotify announced the expansion of its generative artificial intelligence (AI) playlist feature to four additional regions: the United States, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. This feature, which is currently in beta testing, allows Premium users to create customized playlists by inputting specific text prompts.

The AI Playlist was initially launched in April 2024 for users in the United Kingdom and Australia. It enables subscribers to refine their music selections through unique prompts, such as “upbeat pop music for my European summer vacation” or “a romantic playlist for date night at home.” Spotify noted that users can enhance their playlists by mixing genres, moods, artists, and even including references to locations or emojis.

Spotify’s blog post highlighted the success of the AI Playlist in its initial markets, stating that Premium subscribers have created “millions of playlists that they keep coming back to.” The feature is designed to offer an effortless way for users to curate their music experience, although it is still in beta and may not always provide accurate results for non-music-related prompts.

To access the AI Playlist feature, users can navigate to “Your Library” within the Spotify app, click the “+” icon at the top right corner, and select “AI Playlist.” From there, they can choose from suggested prompts or enter their own ideas. The AI will then generate a personalized playlist consisting of 30 tracks tailored to the user’s request.

Spotify’s move comes amid increasing competition from other streaming services like Apple Music and Amazon Music. The company aims to attract new subscribers by enhancing its app with innovative AI capabilities. As of the second quarter of 2024, Spotify reported a 12% increase in paying subscribers compared to the previous year, totaling 246 million.
