The creator of the global sensation “Squid Game,” Hwang Dong-hyuk, has unveiled exciting details about the upcoming second season during a promotional event in Lucca. He emphasized that the new season will feature a larger cast and more intriguing challenges than its predecessor, which became Netflix’s most-watched series upon its release in 2021.
Hwang stated, “In Season 2, Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), who survived Season 1, returns to the games, not to win this time around, but to put an end to these games.” He further elaborated, “There is going to be a larger number of characters this time and more intriguing games that are all worthy of a lot of the viewers’ love and support”.
The new season is set to premiere on December 26, 2024, with a third season already in post-production and hints at an English-language version being developed by U.S. director David Fincher.
Lee Jung-jae, who reprises his role as Seong Gi-hun, acknowledged the pressure to surpass the success of the original series. He noted, “Gi-hun is a very different person in Season 2. This time around he wants revenge. He wants to catch the people behind the games and he wants to bring them to justice”.
The storyline will unfold three years after the events of the first season, bringing back familiar faces alongside new contestants vying for a KRW 45.6 billion prize through deadly childhood games.
