On January 3, 2025, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy announced a significant public health recommendation urging that alcoholic beverages carry warning labels about the cancer risks associated with alcohol consumption. This proposal comes amid growing research linking alcohol to at least seven types of cancer, including breast, liver, and colorectal cancers.
Currently, alcoholic beverage labels include warnings regarding the dangers of drinking during pregnancy and the impairment of driving abilities. However, Murthy’s recommendation seeks to expand these warnings to highlight the cancer risks directly. He noted that alcohol is the third most prevalent preventable cause of cancer in the U.S., following tobacco and obesity.
The Surgeon General’s advisory also encourages healthcare professionals to promote alcohol screening and treatment referrals when necessary. It aims to enhance public understanding of the links between alcohol consumption and cancer risk while advocating for a reevaluation of recommended alcohol intake limits.
Following this announcement, shares of major U.S. alcoholic beverage companies experienced declines, reflecting investor concerns over potential regulatory changes in labeling practices.
