Pop megastar Taylor Swift and South African artist Tyla were the standout winners at the MTV Europe Music Awards held on November 10, 2024, in Manchester, England. Swift secured four awards, including Best Artist and Best Video for her collaboration with Post Malone on “Fortnight.” Leading the nominations with seven nods, she expressed her gratitude to fans through a video message, stating, “The fact that you have honoured the tour, everything that’s happened with the album this year, the video, it’s just unbelievable”.
The ceremony featured a heartfelt tribute to the late singer Liam Payne, who tragically passed away last month after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. Rita Ora, the host of the event and a collaborator of Payne’s on the 2018 track “For You,” led the tribute. She reflected on his impact, saying, “He was a big part of the MTV world and my world and I think a lot of yours at home and everybody in here tonight. He brought so much joy to every room he walked into and he left such a mark on this world”.
Tyla also made headlines by winning three awards: Best Afrobeats, Best R&B, and Best African Act. The event marked a return after last year’s ceremony was canceled due to the conflict in Gaza. Other notable winners included Sabrina Carpenter for Best Song with “Espresso,” Ariana Grande for Best Pop, and Eminem for Best Hip-Hop. Jimin won Best K-Pop, Peso Pluma took home Best Latin, while Liam Gallagher received Best Rock. Additionally, U.S. rapper Busta Rhymes was honored with the Global Icon Award.
This year’s MTV Europe Music Awards took place at Manchester’s new Co-Op Live venue, showcasing a diverse lineup of talent and celebrating significant contributions to music over the past year.
