Leaders from a U.S. dockworkers’ union and their employers are set to resume contract negotiations on January 7, 2025, amid concerns of a potential strike that could disrupt operations at major ports along the East and Gulf coasts. The negotiations come as the current contract extension is set to expire on January 15, creating urgency for both parties to reach an agreement.
The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), which represents dockworkers, previously halted negotiations in early November, citing employer attempts to introduce automated container handling technology that could threaten union jobs. The United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), representing port employers, argued that such automation is necessary for improving efficiency and maintaining global competitiveness. A representative from USMX remarked that the increased container volumes resulting from automation would actually help create more union jobs.
Trade groups have been urging both sides to return to the negotiating table as logistics providers prepare for possible disruptions. This follows a three-day strike in October 2024 that affected numerous ports and resulted in significant delays in cargo handling. The Biden administration intervened during that strike, helping to broker an agreement that included a 16% pay raise over a new six-year master contract.
As the January 15 deadline approaches, importers and exporters are closely monitoring the situation, given that these ports account for approximately half of all U.S. container volumes.
